enterprise

Ah, Enterprise. Like many a Star Trek fan I nearly cried in horror when the theme song first played. I stopped watching after the first episode, but reunited with the fandom again during season three, on the strength of some of the fics I accidentally came across.

A Dish Served Warm
PG | Tucker, Reed, Phlox, Forrest, Archer
Summary: Set during 'In a Mirror, Darkly', we get to see a little scene where Commander Tucker gets his revenge on Major Reed just prior to Archer's staff meeting.
Phlox's lines remind me of 'The Princess Bride' and provided some morbid giggles.

A History of Star Trek
G | Ensemble
Summary: none given
Everyone loves a good parody and it's nice to see someone remembers the officers left behind.

A Holiday Shift
PG | Humor | Sato, Mayweather, Tucker
Summary: Passing the time on a holiday shift.
Usually fics involving a truth or dare game have me cringing in terror, this one had me giggling like a 12 year old.

A Night on the Town
PG-13 | Reed, Sato, Archer, Tucker
Summary: Hoshi's evening doesn't go as planned.
A rather fun piece in which Malcolm and Hoshi have themselves a mini adventure trying to get from point A to point B.

A Way With Words
PG-13 | Reed/Sato, Archer/Sato
Summary: Hoshi loses her languages.
Given how she was portrayed first half of the series, I can see this as a choice an overwhelmed Hoshi would make.

As Flies to Wanton Boys
PG | Ensemble | Crossover with Quantum Leap
Summary: The crew must fight to save themselves from an enemy even they can't defeat. Metafic.
Fabulously funny, and the ending just reminds you that fandoms never die.

Between a Rock and Another Big Rock
PG-13 | Ensemble
Summary: The crew goes hunting underground.
A great Hoshi-centric adventure which also nicely fleshes out the MACOs, especially Hayes. My only minor quibble is that I'm not a fan of the Girly!Hoshi characterzation.

Breaking Circadian Rhythm
R | Reed/Sato
Summary: "The night has a thousand eyes, and the day but one." Malcolm is content to wait.
To sort of paraphrase Joey Tribbiani: Angst, good. Angsty romance, good. Humor, good. All three put together in this fic, what's not to love?

Cathedral Lake
PG-13 | Reed, Sato
Summary: Reed discovers someone he was never meant to know.
I wasn't sure about this the first time I read it, but the more I read it, the more I liked it. Fics like this make the Daniels/Temporal Cold War arc a little more bearable.

Dear Hoshi
PG | Reed, Sato
Summary: Three letters from Malcolm to Hoshi.
Sad, but sweet. Given their differences, I thought Malcolm and Hoshi would've made interesting friends, and this fic is a perfect 'what could have been' example.

Dyslexic Agnostics
PG-13 | Reed
Summary: Malcolm is sent on a rescue mission that wasn't quite what he expected.
A fic that never fails to bring a smile to my face. To say anymore would spoil the fun.

Education of Heroes: Hoshi Sato
G | Sato, Archer
Summary: A combination of experiences light years away shows Hoshi a nuance of language within herself.
I generally avoid pre-series fics because I have trouble with the way an author views a character and how they come across on screen, but this one adds to Hoshi's character and also touches upon later episodes.

Ensign
R | Reed/Sato
Summary: The morning after the night before.
A lovely piece of angst that features a harder Hoshi who seems quite appropriate given the events of season three.

Fireworks
PG | Reed, Tucker
Summary: A bit of seasonal silliness.
Holiday related humor! I can so see Malcolm and Trip having this conversation.

Hearts and Arrows
PG-13, R (Chapter 4) | Reed/Sato, T'Pol, Tucker
Summary: Aphrodite's tired of Cupid lounging around the house, and sends him back to work. First mission: bring a little loving to the crew of Enterprise.
I think this is one of the first Reed/Sato fics I read, if not the first. Strangely enough while I don't really care for T'Pol on the show, I loved her and her scenes here more than Malcolm and Hoshi's story.

I Wanna Know
PG | Reed, Sato
Summary: Malcolm's got a date for movie night. Hurray! But he likes someone else... eh?
Argh! The author wasn't kidding when labeling the fic as somewhat obscure. I can't decide if the ending is Reed/Sato or Reed/OC, all I know is that I like it, even if the ending's up in the air.

In Space, No One Can Hear You Whimper...
G | Sato, Porthos
Summary: Perhaps the two most under-appreciated members of the crew can help each other out...
Like the author, I don't think Archer is this inconsiderate, but then again, the writing in season one didn't do him any favors. Nonetheless, this is a cute fic.

Invisible Man
PG | Mayweather, Sato, Tucker, Reed, Archer
Summary: Travis has a problem with invisibility. Trip and Malcolm don't.
Although I'm not a Travis/Hoshi fan, this is the friendly interaction (minus the Travis angst) that I wish we saw on screen between the characters.

Nobody
PG-13 | Reed/Sato
Summary: First kiss.
If Chakotay/Seven and Worf/Troi could come out of nowhere, I can root for a scene like this on Enterprise can't I?

Pixie Bug, or Malcolm Woke Up FAIRY!
PG-13 | Reed, Archer
Summary: Our favorite security officer caught a Pixie Bug in the Delphic Expanse, and one morning he woke up fairy! Literally. Sparkly purple Malcolm Reed alert.
Totally hilarious crack!fic. Wouldn't you want to read a fic with the line: "Oh, look, it's the great ship Enterprise and her little nuisance of an armory officer. Let's blow her out of the sky."

Rose Among Dandelions
PG | Reed, Sato
Summary: Malcolm contemplates his going-nowhere passion for the lovely linguist, among other things.
What can I say? I'm a sucker for one-sided romances and this fic weaves the Reed/Sato bits into a great overall fic that explores how everything's changed since the Xindi attack.

Snowball Fight 2155
G | Ensemble
Summary: Snowball: snow pressed into a ball for throwing playfully. This is Snowball Fight '55, a winter to remember.
Every so often you just need a feel good fic with the crew of the NX-01. This is it for me, though I still have my doubts about T'Pol joining them.

Speak No Evil / Mad Klingons and Englishmen
PG-13 | Ensemble
Summary: (Speak no Evil) When the Enterprise is threatened, the brave and heroic Lieutenant Reed must act as Armoury Officer, Chief Engineer and Captain to save the ship. (Mad Klingons and Englishmen) The mission is in jeopardy, Reed's life is in peril, and Archer wants to play hero: it's a typical day on Enterprise.
Grouping these two fics together as they're part of the same series. Both are Malcom-centric, rather absurd and funny as hell. I'd so love to hear Dominic Keating do a Scott Bakula as Archer impression.

The Colony on Oldfolks Prime
PG | Tucker, Reed, Sato, T'Pol
Summary: Enterprise stumbles across an intergalactic old-folks home.
Old people humor! Who wouldn't want to read a fic that has the following situation: "The two men exchanged one terrified look before going back to back: the better to defend against unsolicited buttock pinchings and thigh strokings."

The Emperor is Dead, Long Live the Empress!
PG | Sato, Tucker
Summary: Hoshi Sato needs help in consolidating power and helps Charles Tucker take care of some unfinished business. Set immediately after 'In A Mirror, Darkly, Part II'.
Oh I wish we had seen more of the mirror universe. The last part is something I would've liked to see play out on screen, not because I don't like T'Pol, but rather because it's something unexpected and fits with MU!Hoshi's character.

To Meander, With A Measure of Confidence
PG-13 | Ensemble
Summary: Evil!Porthos, aliens, a random 'shippy moment, one flashback, a minor crossover, and some angst. Guest appearance by the Earth's gravitational pull.
Eight drabbles that, while not interconnected, form an interesting look at the crew. The last one is particularly haunting (and I believe touches upon a dropped storyline).

Triad: The L Series
R | Reed/Sato, Tucker/Sato
Summary: Three short stories revolving around Malcolm's storyline in the second season premiere, Shockwave II.
While the stories do share the same theme, they're not related. Each is it's own little standalone and packs a different emotional punch. As the the author herself notes, the order of the stories also has a bit of significance: "one story where nothing changes, one story where everything changes, and one story where nothing is ever the same again."

Until the Next Dictator...
PG-13 | Sato
Summary: Mirror Universe. Empress Hoshi Sato's thoughts as she is betrayed, decades after her ascent to power.
I would've loved to revisit the Mirror Universe to see how Hoshi handled her reign. Here we pick up on her last day and her actions over the years and her final thoughts are (in my opinion) spot on with her MU characterization.
